I wrote these in a notebook on an ordinary afternoon, fountain pen, no plan to publish them. Ten lines. They were instructions to myself, mostly — the things I have to keep relearning, and the things I end up saying to nearly every client eventually.
I'm putting them here because they hold up. Not as affirmations — I don't have much use for affirmations — but as operating instructions. A short list you can run yourself against when the business feels heavier than it should.
Here they are, in the order I wrote them:
simplify.
cultivate self-trust.
accept success.
put energy into growth.
align goals with values.
possibility is limitless.
fuck the how's.
clarify desires.
decide faster.
slow down.
What I've learned is that the power isn't in any single line. It's in the tensions between them. So let me walk it.
Simplify.
Most stuck businesses are over-built, not under-built. More offers, more funnels, more open loops — and somewhere under all of it, a decision nobody's made. Complexity is often just avoidance wearing a productive face. Before you add anything this quarter, find one thing to remove.
Cultivate self-trust.
Strategy collapses the moment you hand your judgment to whoever is loudest in the room — the guru, the case study, the person with the bigger audience. Self-trust isn't a feeling you summon. It's built, slowly, through small promises you actually keep to yourself. Keep one this week, exactly as you made it. That's the whole exercise.
Accept success.
This is the quiet one, and the one I see most often. Capable people cap themselves right as things start to work — they complicate it, discount it, add a hard new thing, find a reason it doesn't count. Letting success land is a skill, and most people were never taught it. When something works, name it. Then leave it alone.
Put energy into growth.
Energy is the real budget. Money you can borrow; the hours of clear, generative attention you get in a day, you cannot. So watch where it goes — toward the work that compounds, or toward maintenance theater that only feels like progress. At week's end, audit where your energy actually went, not where you meant for it to go.
Align goals with values.
A goal that violates your values gets sabotaged from the inside, every single time — usually right before the finish line, in ways that look like bad luck. Alignment isn't the soft part of strategy. It's the cheapest performance optimization there is. For every goal on your list, ask which value it serves. If the answer is none, cut it.
Possibility is limitless.
The constraint is almost never the market. It's the menu you've allowed yourself to order from. Widen the menu before you optimize the order. Write down the version of this you've quietly filed under “unrealistic,” and then ask the only useful question: what would have to be true for that to work?
Fuck the how's.
This is the line people underline.
The fastest way to kill a real desire is to demand the mechanism up front. But how would that even work — said early enough, it's a pre-emptive no dressed as diligence. Decide the what first. Let the how assemble itself after the decision, because it can't before. Commit to the what for thirty days before you allow yourself to touch the how.
Clarify desires.
You cannot build toward a blur. And most of what sounds like “I don't know what I want” is really “I haven't let myself say it out loud yet.” Precision is the entire game here. Finish the sentence — what I actually want is ___ — and don't hedge the second half.
Decide faster.
Slow decisions are expensive. They cost you the compounding you'd have earned by now, plus the steady drain of carrying an open loop in your head for weeks. If a decision is reversible, make it quickly and on purpose. Give yourself hours, not weeks.
Slow down.
And then — build slowly.
Here's the paradox the whole list is built around. Decide faster and slow down are not in conflict; they're a sequence. Speed on the decision is what buys you the patience to execute well. Sustainable performance is paced, not frantic. This is the line the other nine are in service of.
How to actually use this
Don't try to do all ten at once — that would violate the first one. Pick the line that made you a little uncomfortable as you read. That's usually the one with something for you. Run yourself against it for a week. Then come back.
